While phragmites is widespread in the Saginaw Bay, as we have the resources and opportunity, Saginaw Bay CISMA can help to treat shoreline areas and combat the spread. None of this can happen without cooperation of our partners and area landowners, you are the key to success of these treatments! Every year is a new opportunity for what we are able to accomplish. This year, Saginaw Bay CISMA has identified two areas for shoreline phragmites treatment in addition to current projects.
Arenac County
Summer 2024
We are looking at doing Phragmites treatment north of the Au Gres river in areas where we have not yet worked! Check out the map for details! If you own property next to or within this treatment area and want treatment, please reach out to us as we finalize our treatments in August! Landowners need to fill out two different forms in order to receive treatment. The cost of this treatment will either be 100% or partially covered with the remainder being cost-shared with the landowner. This project is funded through the Partners for Fish and Wildlife program through the US Fish and Wildlife Service. These treatments will be conducted for two years, after which it is the landowner's responsibility to maintain the results on their property after completion.

September 25, 2023: We have successfully completed our 2023 follow-up treatment to last year's aerial treatment! We were able to complete this in only one day! Thank you to all the landowners and collaborators who made this work possible, we will be here for any follow-up questions as the phragmites dies off for the year.
We have conducted post-treatment monitoring of this area following the 2022 treatment season and have identified sections untreated previously. These sections will be treated in the 2023 season.
Past work: In Arenac County off of Booth Rd. there is a growing phragmites infestation. We are able to treat a section of this shoreline this year! Landowners with shoreline property adjacent to the mapped proposed treatment zone are encouraged to fill out landowner permission forms and return them to Saginaw Bay CISMA as soon as possible.
We'd be remiss if we didn't acknowledge some of the property owners in this area. They banded together to pay for treatment of a section of phragmites in their treatment area. This kind of cooperation between property owners will not only save money but also will improve the success rate of SB CISMA's and their treatments and reduce the amount of re-introduction of phragmites after treatment!

Huron County
Summer 2024
We are planning on doing Phragmites treatment in areas of Huron County this fall. This includes Valley Island Rd. South of Shuck Rd., portions of the Rose Island Rd treated for one year, and new areas south of Caseville. For Caseville, check out the map for details! If you own property next to or within this treatment area and want treatment, please reach out to us as we finalize our treatments in August! Landowners need to fill out two different forms in order to receive treatment. Due to the lower volume of Phragmites in these areas, cost of treatment will be 100% covered by grant funding through Partners for Fish and Wildlife funding of US Fish and Wildlife Service. These treatments will be conducted for two years, after which it is the landowner's responsibility to maintain the results on their property after completion.

October 2, 2023: Herbicide treatments have officially begun!
September 25, 2023: We are excited to begin our 2023 treatment time for the Rose Island Rd. area! We look forward to working on even more of the shoreline PLUS doing secondary treatment of the 2022 work. There will again be aerial treatment on the water and ground treatment on the shoreline.
Post-Treatment Landowner Meeting: Tuesday, August 8 at Sebewaing Village Park, 5:30 PM.
We have conducted post-treatment monitoring of the Rose Island Rd area following the 2022 treatment season and have identified sections untreated previously. These sections will be treated in the 2023 season in addition to second-year treatments of regrowth. The treatment area will expand north and south of the initial treatment area based on the amount of funds remaining for this project.
Because this project is in partnership with Partners for Fish and Wildlife, treatments are a part of a contract which entails responsibilities for the landowner following initial treatments of phragmites, there is a separate form from the CISMA's landowner permission form that must be filled out. Landowners who submitted permission forms for this project who were not in the 2022 project area do not need to resubmit.
Past work: In partnership with the USFWS Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program and the Huron County Conservation District we plan to treat phragmites in the Rose Island area, which is just north of Sebewaing. We need landowner permission and cooperation to continue the long-term management and follow-up that will be required for success!
