Please enjoy this footage of our post-treatment drone survey August of 2022!
In partnership with Michigan Tech University and the Sustain Our Great Lakes initiative, Saginaw Bay CISMA has done phragmites treatment along the shoreline of much of Hampton Township in Bay County. In 2023, we plan to continue along the shoreline towards the thumb in our quest to restore the shoreline! The map above show the full range of planned treatment for Hampton Township, with maps of new treatment areas coming soon. If you own property in this area up to we want to hear from you! Without signed landowner permission forms from landowners, we are unable to treat your property. Visit our landowners page to download a landowner permission form. Summer 2023
It's that time again! The invasive species monitoring crew, our very own James and Jami are preparing to begin follow-up monitoring and survey work both on foot and by kayak. They will continue to monitor Hampton Township and begin pre-treatment monitoring in the southern part of the township up towards Wisner TWP in Tuscola County. They are looking for regrowth and spread post-treatment and for patches of phragmites in new locations. We will be hosting a landowner meeting for landowners new to this project, stay tuned for meeting details. Phragmites is typically treated in late August-first hard frost.
Winter 2022
Treatment season for 2022 was concluded in October. Activities were conducted by the CISMA's invasive species strike team, which performed spot treatment in areas where phragmites regrowth was observed. Aerial mapping from August 2021 showed that from the Fall 2021 treatment, there was an over 90% reduction in living phragmites. This successful treatment would not have been possible without the assistance and cooperation of Hampton TWP, our partners, and the residents of Hampton TWP. Of course, invasive species removal is only one aspect of stewardship and keeping our natural resources beautiful and healthy. Residents are encouraged to monitor the shoreline for phragmites regrowth or signs of native vegetation and wildlife, and send photos of observations to sbcisma@gmail.com. In 2023 we will begin monitoring activities farther along the shoreline and into Quanicassee, including part of the river.
Fall 2021
Starting on October 4, 2021 SB-CISMA contractors will be treating Phragmites in Hampton Township using aquatic-safe glyphosate herbicides. Hamilton Helicopters will be providing aerial spray treatment on the open water from a distance of 100 ft. from the shoreline. On the ground treatment will be conducted by Clarke Aquatics, beginning on Oct. 11 out to a distance of100 ft. from the shoreline. Phragmites treatment will be conducted only on properties that have been approved ahead of time by the landowners. Dates are subject to change due to weather.
