Roadside Invasive Species Treatment

2024 Update: We are currently conducting post-treatment monitoring of our treatments sites from 2023 to determine where will needed to be sprayed this year!

In 2023, we did treatments of European frog-bit, Japanese knotweed, and invasive Phragmites treatments on a selection of county roadways in our area! We have also partnered with MDOT to treat Japanese knotweed on some private properties adjacent to state roads to help protect our infrastructure.

Why treat roadsides?

Roadside ditches and rights-of-way are one of the most common pathways for invasive species spread!
  • Mowers, tractors, and cars can pick up the seeds and plant fragments and carry them along.
  • Plants that spread through root fragments or sprout after mowing activities can sprout and return with a vengeance.
  • Roadside ditches are like a road for aquatic invasive species to easily spread into new wet areas.
Non-native phragmites isn't just ugly to look at, it can be a hazard as well! These plants can grow over 15 ft tall, and can easily block the line of sight for intersections.
Japanese knotweed if not managed can grow through pavement and obscure traffic signs and intersections.
