Roadside Invasive Species Treatment

In fall 2022, Saginaw Bay CISMA, in cooperation with the county road commissions of Bay, Huron, and Arenac Counties, will be treating phragmites along roadside ditches and rights-of-way.

Why treat roadsides?

Roadside ditches and rights-of-way are one of the most common pathways for invasive species spread!
  • Mowers, tractors, and cars can pick up the seeds and plant fragments and carry them along.
  • Plants that spread through root fragments or sprout after mowing activities can sprout and return with a vengeance.
  • Roadside ditches are like a road for aquatic invasive species to easily spread into new wet areas.
Non-native phragmites isn't just ugly to look at, it can be a hazard as well! These plants can grow over 15 ft tall, and can easily block the line of sight for intersections.

Where Are we treating?

We plan to do roadside treatment in these mapped areas!
